Boat Battery Maintenance
If your boat has a battery, it’s important that you take the time to properly maintain it. A boat’s battery is a critical component that requires special care in order to function at its best. If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to boat battery maintenance, this guide from Lacey’s Narrows Marina has the information you need.
Install The Correct Boat Battery
Boat batteries come in many types, including deep-cycle, crank-start, and dual-purpose. With so many types available, it’s that much more important that you know which kind of battery should be installed into your boat. If you don’t already know, check your owner’s manual. Whenever you install a new battery in your boat, jot down the date so that you can more easily keep track of the battery’s age.
Clean Your Boat Battery
Corrosion can build up on your battery’s posts over time. This will result in reduced performance, and even permanent damage if you let it build up long enough. Luckily, you can use a mixture of baking soda and water to clean the posts. Once the posts have fully dried, lightly grease them with dielectric grease.
Recharge The Battery Often
Batteries should ideally be kept well charged whenever possible to promote long term battery health. We recommend recharging your battery after every voyage, or as often as your owner’s manual recommends. The owner’s manual should also be able to tell you which chargers will be compatible with your boat’s battery.
Store The Boat Battery Correctly
When the time comes to store your boat’s battery, always do so in a cool and dry place. This will help ensure long-term performance. The battery will still need the occasional cleaning and recharging while in storage, so be sure to check it at least once a month.
